What is the Internet?
The Internet or Net is a worldwide collection of interconnected computers. On the internet, the World Wide Web is an international system for linking storehouses of information, articles, photographs, sounds, video, animated pictures. It is like a global library.
What you need to connect
- A computer equipped with a monitor, soundcard and speakers so that you can see and hear the information on the Net
- A modem that connects your computer to the Net
- An Internet account with a company that provides the connection between your computer via the telephone line to the Internet.
- E-mail - an electronic message system that allows you to communicate with another person connected to the Internet anywhere in the world, all for the cost of a local call.

Estimated costs start at £1000-£1500 per household and can rise to £2000-£3000, depending on your choice of equipment and quality.
