Glenn Thompson, born in Harlem, raised in Bedford Stuyvesant, New York City, settled in East London after traveling round the world, and with money borrowed from wealthy aristocrats founded Centerprise in Hackney, a "coffee shop, community centre, and bookshop", that sold hundreds of copies of George Jackson's Soledad Brother at its opening in 1970. From this modest beginning came Writers and Readers publishers and a range of titles "to bring books and the love of reading to people, especially children, who have never experienced them". The For Beginners Documentary series presents brilliant but intimidating ideas to adults using the comic book form. Titles on Miles Davis, Jazz, Toni Morrison, Pan Africanism, Malcolm X, Black Panthers, and the Black Holocaust jostle with works on Che Guevara, Hindu holy men, Freud and European psychiatrists, and structuralist philosophers Lacan and Derrida. Subject areas cover African/Black Studies, Arts/Media, Literature, Music, Philosophy/Linguistics, Politics/History, Science, Social Issues, Psychiatry, Spirit/Mind/Body, US Studies, and Women/Gender Issues.
